Education Scotland, as the national agency charged with supporting quality and improvement in Scottish education, has lead responsibility for the Digital Learning and Teaching (DLT) programme to deliver this vision. This national programme has over 100 customer organisations and works with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders many of whom are represented on the governance, advisory and supporting groups. The programme delivers and supports a range of new and evolving services and establishes and operates a number of technology related contractual arrangements for its growing customer and user base. This includes Glow, the national online platform for education, which regularly has over 350,000 users each month. This is a fast moving and exciting area of work which offers lots of opportunity for working across many digital services and technologies.


We are currently seeking applications for a Senior Test Engineer based in either Glasgow, Livingston, Dundee or Aberdeen.


The Senior Test Engineer will have a particular focus on working with colleagues within the programme to ensure that testing is aligned with business scenarios and strategy. This will be a key role in the service led design approach used to provide digital services to the Scottish education system. The role holder will also help to drive the collection of information and creation of recommendations for improvements.


The post-holder will be familiar with online productivity suites such as Google Workspace and M365 as well other cloud technologies. The post-holder will lead on testing, working closely with the Business Analyst, Product Managers and Technical teams. They will also work closely with Senior Management to help contribute to the programme’s strategic vision. The post holder will be line managed by the Technical Delivery Manager.



This post attracts a £5,000 DDaT Pay Supplement after a 3 month competency qualifying period. Pay supplements are temporary payments designed to address recruitment and retention issues caused by market pressures, and are subject to regular review.


• Writing, debugging and refactoring test code.

• Identifying and maintain suitable test environments.

• Testing strategy in line for the overall strategic vision of the organisation.

• Form part of project and product teams to help provide assurance and quality for the delivery team.

• Identify and raise awareness of risks arising from the test results.

• Identify new and implement existing test frameworks to improve confidence in testing.

• Mentor and advise other team members in testing practices.

• Work closely with technical leads to reach a common understanding of the products and test coverage at unit level.

• Collaborate with analysts to make sure the required business scenarios are covered in the acceptance test scripts.

• Test engineers work on both functional and non-functional areas of an application.

Technical skills required for this role: -
-Functional testing. You can design and execute a wide range of testing techniques and communicate test results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You know how to make decisions on the environment for testing and coach others. You can identify defects, alerting the business to them, and you can help prioritise them based on defect severity. (Relevant skill level: practitioner)
-Non-functional testing. You can design and execute a wide range of non-functional testing techniques and communicate non-functional test results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You can make decisions on running types of non-functional testing. You know how to coach and mentor others. You can identify defects, alerting the business to them, and help prioritise them based on defect severity. (Relevant skill level: practitioner)
-Technical breadth. You have a good working knowledge of different tools and techniques and can train others. You can advise others on testing techniques and frameworks. You know how to research, plan and train others within the team. (Relevant skill level: practitioner)
-Test analysis. You can think creatively, ask the right questions and critically evaluate and communicate findings to a larger team. You know how to lead investigative work into problems and opportunities in existing processes. You can drive the collection of information and creation of recommendations for improvements. You can absorb large amounts of conflicting information and use it to determine solutions. (Relevant skill level: practitioner)


Essential Criteria 


1. Demonstrate experience of working in a testing role in a team or organisation delivering IT projects with a strong track record of completing objectives on time.

2. A technical IT background and proven experience of collaboration with analysis and technical colleagues.

3. Able to work on own initiative and manage work on concurrent products and projects.

4. Technical knowledge of online productivity tools such as Google Workspace and M365.
