Overview

Are you looking for an opportunity to work as part of a small team onboard one of Marine Scotland’s Marine Research Vessels?

 

Marine Scotland is the lead marine management organisation in Scotland. It was established in April 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas.

 

The Fishing Mate role is based on our scientific vessels.  As part of the onboard team, you will be one of the navigational watch keepers, assisting the Commanding Officer and/or the Fishing Master with the running of the vessel, fishing operations and scientific equipment operation. 

 

You will be responsible for Passage Planning and maintenance of charts and nautical publications, including Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs).  You will also be responsible for inspecting and ensuring that all lifesaving appliances (LSA), portable firefighting equipment (FFE) and pollution prevention equipment are maintained in good condition and ready for immediate use.

 

The Marine Research Vessels’ main function is to ensure efficient and effective provision at sea to support the work of the scientific programme within Marine Scotland. Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme. To ensure this success both Marine Research Vessels are fitted with a wide range of deployment and recovery facilities for fishing gear and equipment, scientific and environmental sensors, and data gathering systems.

 

The marine research vessels are - MRV Alba Na Mara and MRV Scotia and are 27 metres and 69 metres in length respectively.  Research cruises vary in length, but generally are no more than 28 days.

 

All vessels work double crewing allowing for trip on/trip off rostering.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Commanding Officer or Fishing Master to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
  • Navigational watchkeeper as required for navigation and science programme.
  • Assist Fishing Master with regard to fishing and science equipment and operations.
  • Ensure bridge and navigational equipment is operational.
  • Responsible for passage planning, maintenance of charts and nautical publications, including ENCs for the ECDIS
  • Responsible for the upkeep and filing of publications supplied by the contracted chart Agent as part of the new edition service. This also includes the update of Admiralty Digital Publications. (ADPs)
  • Inspecting and ensuring that all lifesaving appliances (LSA), portable firefighting equipment (FFE) and pollution prevention equipment are maintained in good condition and ready for immediate use and reporting any deficiencies to Commanding Officer
  • Maintaining records for LSA and FFE

Certificate of Competency (Fishing Class 2 or similar)

Medical Fitness- Unlimited ENG1 (Valid)

Proficiency In Survival Craft

GMDSS certification

ECDIS Certification

Up to date STCW 2010 Refreshers

Designated Security Duties

Essential Criteria:

1.  Demonstrate leadership experience during fishing or science operations at sea resulting in efficient operations.

2.  Proven ability in taking and adhering to instructions to ensure the safe and effective running of fishing or science operations whilst working within a small team.

3.  Demonstrated ability maintaining a safe navigational watch from previous experience at sea.

4.  Excellent people management skills, ability to provide clear direction to team members in a working environment to ensure work is carried out safely.

Minimum time in post:

You will be expected to remain in post for a minimum of three years unless successful at gaining promotion to a higher Band or Grade.
