You will also be required to work in the capacity of either Cook and/or Steward, dependent on vessel requirements
As Cook/Steward, you could be based onboard any of the Marine Protection or Research vessels. You will assist the Chief Steward with cooking and galley preparation as well as looking after the general housekeeping of cabins and communal areas onboard the vessels. The role will follow a marine working pattern which in general is 3 weeks on/off on the Patrol vessels and 4 weeks on/off on the research vessels.
The Marine Directorate is the lead marine management organisation in Scotland. It was established in April 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas.
The Marine Research Vessels’ main function is to ensure efficient and effective provision at sea to support the work of the scientific programme within Marine Scotland. Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme.
The Marine Protection Vessels are Minna, Jura and Hirta and carry out patrols which normally last 21 days. Research cruises vary in length, but are generally 28 days.
All vessels work double crewing allowing for trip on/trip off rostering.

Relevant STCW certification including up to date certification in Personal Survival Techniques, Basic Firefighting, elementary first, Personal and Social Responsibility plus Proficiency in Security Duties
Valid unrestricted ENG1 medical certificate
Food Hygiene Certification (as per latest STCW requirements)
Essential Criteria:
1. Experience working in the capacity of either Cook Steward.
2. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work with the minimum of supervision to produce a high standard nutritious food.
3. Experience maintaining a high standard of hygiene both in preparation of food and in cleaning galley, food handling spaces and food store rooms.
4. Ability to manage your own time and plan your work day to ensure all required tasks are completed at the appropriate times.

Time in post:
You will be expected to remain in post for a minimum of three years unless successful at gaining promotion to a higher Band or Grade.
