The Crofting Commission is a Non-Departmental Public Body of approximately 70 staff. The organisation is responsible for the regulation of crofting and maintains a register of crofts. Crofting is a traditional system of smallholdings unique to certain areas of Scotland, particularly the Highlands and Islands. Crofting brings a range of benefits such as sustaining rural communities, supporting biodiversity, and low intensity, small scale food production. Crofting is supported by considerable legislation that gives rights to crofters and protects crofting land for the future, in which the Crofting Commission has a pivotal role.     This exciting opportunity sits within the Policy, Grazings, Development and Communications team of 10 staff. The team has a varied remit. You will focus on Common Grazings. Common Grazings are sizable areas of croft land with a shared management structure to graze livestock. Shareholders in the Common Grazings can form a committee to run the grazings.   As the post holder you will provide advice and guidance for a wide range of situations for shareholders. This involves encouraging shareholders to form grazings committees, answering shareholder queries, processing regulatory applications and helping to run training events. This involves correspondence via email, telephone and in some instances visiting the grazings and meeting shareholders in person. The records for the grazings can be historical and complex and an element of the role will be to assimilate and analyse this information. Investigation into the records is done to understand and resolve any issues such as uncertainty over share positions.   Excellent communication is vital to the role. You should be able to develop and maintain good working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including internal Commission staff and external contacts such as crofters, solicitors, landlords and government departments. The role would suit someone who works well within a team, is calm and professional in working with customers, has good attention to detail and an interest in learning and understanding complex records. Our mission is to be Scotland’s leading authority on food safety, standards and healthy eating; using data and evidence to provide assurance and advice that inspires consumer confidence and improves public health.   FSS are looking to recruit Trainee Meat Hygiene Inspectors to deliver Official Controls in slaughterhouses across Scotland, ensuring animals are slaughtered humanely and the meat produced is fit for human consumption.   The Meat Hygiene Inspector role is one of the key front-line operational roles within FSS.  You will be fully trained in all aspects of Meat Inspection, undergoing a comprehensive training programme that involves a mix of theoretical and practical training resulting in gaining the Royal Society for Public Health Diploma in Meat Inspection. You will be fully supported during the 6-month training period by a dedicated assessor as well as in plant mentors to guide you through the practical elements.   This role is on fixed term basis for the first 9 months. Upon successful completion of probation and the required qualification, the staff will be moved into a permanent contract at B1 level (£32,140). Once qualified you will work as part of an inspection team at your assigned base plant. You will work under an Official Veterinarian (OV) who will provide technical support and guidance, and be line managed by a Field Operations Coordinator (FOC) who will provide managerial support.   Two of the posts are for 30 hours per week (Salary pro rata for Dingwall and Grantown-on-Spey) while the other three are 37 hours per week. If you have an interest in the marine environment and would like to work on one of the most respected environmental monitoring programmes (the Scottish Coastal Observatory) in Europe, then we would like to hear from you.   We have two exciting part time (18.5 hours per week) opportunities for Plankton Analysts in our Science, Evidence, Digital and Data (SEDD) portfolio which sits within the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate.   The main role of these posts is the identification and enumeration of plankton in support of SEDD work relating to environmental monitoring and assessments for the OSLO/PARIS commission (OSPAR) and the UK Marine Strategy status.  You will ensure your work supports data quality requirements and will also work to assist in the general running of the plankton labs in Aberdeen.  The posts also involve weekly field sampling trips and may also provide the opportunity to participate in offshore sampling cruises.  These posts  will be expected to work closely and flexibly across SEDD, where necessary in line with annual delivery plans.    Due to the nature of this role, you will be expected to participate in field work activities at sea.  You will also be expected to work in a laboratory setting onsite at the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen for the majority of the working week.   The Plankton delivery area is currently focused on the identification and enumeration of plankton communities around the Scottish coast to fulfil statutory monitoring and assessment requirements, and identification of the impacts of climate change. It is part of the Climate Change, Biodiversity and Ecosystems (CCBE) work area of the SEDD portfolio.   The CCBE work area provides scientific advice and undertakes monitoring of multiple parameters in the marine environment such as the Scottish Coastal Observatory. Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme.   The Marine Protection Vessels are Minna, Jura and Hirta and carry out patrols which normally last 21 days. Research cruises vary in length, but are generally 28 days.   All vessels work double crewing allowing for trip on/trip off rostering.

In the current programme, this is split between direct aid to farmers and crofters totalling £500m and a further £200m under the banner of the Scottish Rural Development Programme. It is also responsible for other regulatory activity and expert technical advice. RPID teams of professional agricultural, customer service and administrative staff are based in a network of 17 offices located around rural Scotland. These teams manage the implementation of agricultural, environmental and rural policies, process applications for funding and provide high quality customer service. As a Higher Agricultural Officer, you will perform a key management role within the RPID Stornoway office, managing, developing and supporting a team of 5 Agricultural Officers.   The Agricultural Officer team undertake a wide variety of duties, many of an outdoor nature, including visits to crofts to carry out inspections. Our inspections may involve working in a livestock environment, verifying land eligibility in diverse landscapes and carrying out site visits in relation to crofting matters such as regulatory applications and capital grants. The team also undertake desk-based processing of claims and applications, and engage directly with customers as the primary point of contact for crofters and the rural community in the area.   This position is primarily a management role, but it also includes the requirement to undertake some inspections as well, and carrying out site visits to diverse types of agricultural establishments, often over extensive and difficult terrain and in all weather conditions. Experience of crossing this type of land and a willingness to undertake these visits are prerequisites for this post.

This includes enforcing UK, and International fisheries laws and regulations. This is intended to assist the conservation of fish stocks and in creating the conditions necessary for the existence of a modern and sustainable sea fishing industry.   The Marine Research Vessels’ main function is to ensure efficient and effective provision at sea to support the work of the scientific programme within Marine Directorate. Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme. To ensure this success both Marine Research Vessels are fitted with a wide range of deployment and recovery facilities for fishing gear and equipment, scientific and environmental sensors, and data gathering systems.   The Marine Protection Vessels are Minna, Jura and Hirta. Minna is 47 metres in length and both Jura and Hirta are 84 metres in length. These vessels carry out patrols which normally last 21 days. Marine Directorate also operate a number of smaller independent craft within the inshore protection programme. The research vessels, MRV Alba Na Mara and MRV Scotia are 27 metres and 69 metres in length respectively. Research cruises can vary in length, on Alba. Scotia works a 4 week on 4 week off schedule  All vessels work double crewing allowing for trip on/trip off rostering.   As a Seaman you will generally be based on our compliance and science vessels however, it is expected that, if successful, you may also spend time on the smaller independent RIBs used as part of the Inshore Protection Programme.   You will be based onboard any of the vessels where you will be part of a team responsible to the First Officer onboard. The role will follow a marine working pattern which in general is 3 weeks on/off (4 weeks on 4 weeks off for Scotia).   The vessels work mainly in Scottish waters using Aberdeen and Glasgow as their turn around locations. If based onboard either of the Science vessels you will be also be  an active member of the deck team assisting with all  methods of fishing equipment and the science operations.   If you are onboard the Compliance vessels you will be part of the deck team assisting the British Sea Fishery Officers onboard fishing vessels and ensuring their safe embarkation on and off the vessels at sea.   Additionally as a Seaman with the Marine Directorate you will be given the opportunity to progress and become a qualified PO either boarding assistant or fisherman.

We are the certifying authority for seed potatoes in Scotland and provide advice and scientific services to the ARE Directorate and stakeholders in the potato industry.   The Bacteriologist role sits within the Potato, Virology and Zoology branch. The Branch's, core function is to provide a diagnostic testing service on a range of samples to meet the Scottish Government’s commitments in relation to Plant and Bee Health legislation and Seed Potato Classification.   Using a range of techniques such as DNA extraction and qPCR, you will be responsible for the day to day routine testing and diagnosis of potato and plant material for Dickeya and Pectobacterium spp. You will also work closely with and provide support to the Potato Bacteriologist.   You will report directly to the Potato Bacteriologist and work alongside Potato pathologists within the branch, and other bacteriologists within the Plant Health branch.   The work of the Bacteriologist is performed predominantly in the laboratory and glasshouse, this can also include field work subject to survey results.
