Our mission is to be Scotland’s leading authority on food safety, standards and healthy eating; using data and evidence to provide assurance and advice that inspires consumer confidence and improves public health.   FSS are looking to recruit Trainee Meat Hygiene Inspectors to deliver Official Controls in slaughterhouses across Scotland, ensuring animals are slaughtered humanely and the meat produced is fit for human consumption.   The Meat Hygiene Inspector role is one of the key front-line operational roles within FSS.  You will be fully trained in all aspects of Meat Inspection, undergoing a comprehensive training programme that involves a mix of theoretical and practical training resulting in gaining the Royal Society for Public Health Diploma in Meat Inspection. You will be fully supported during the 6-month training period by a dedicated assessor as well as in plant mentors to guide you through the practical elements.   This role is on fixed term basis for the first 9 months. Upon successful completion of probation and the required qualification, the staff will be moved into a permanent contract at B1 level (£32,140). Once qualified you will work as part of an inspection team at your assigned base plant. You will work under an Official Veterinarian (OV) who will provide technical support and guidance, and be line managed by a Field Operations Coordinator (FOC) who will provide managerial support.   Two of the posts are for 30 hours per week (Salary pro rata for Dingwall and Grantown-on-Spey) while the other three are 37 hours per week. If you have an interest in the marine environment and would like to work on one of the most respected environmental monitoring programmes (the Scottish Coastal Observatory) in Europe, then we would like to hear from you.   We have two exciting part time opportunities for Plankton Analysts in our Science, Evidence, Digital and Data (SEDD) portfolio which sits within the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate.   The main role of these posts is the identification and enumeration of plankton in support of SEDD work relating to environmental monitoring and assessments for the OSLO/PARIS commission (OSPAR) and the UK Marine Strategy status.  You will ensure your work supports data quality requirements and will also work to assist in the general running of the plankton labs in Aberdeen.  The posts also involve weekly field sampling trips and may also provide the opportunity to participate in offshore sampling cruises.  These posts  will be expected to work closely and flexibly across SEDD, where necessary in line with annual delivery plans.    Due to the nature of this role, you will be expected to participate in field work activities at sea.  You will also be expected to work in a laboratory setting onsite at the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen for the majority of the working week.   The Plankton delivery area is currently focused on the identification and enumeration of plankton communities around the Scottish coast to fulfil statutory monitoring and assessment requirements, and identification of the impacts of climate change. It is part of the Climate Change, Biodiversity and Ecosystems (CCBE) work area of the SEDD portfolio.   The CCBE work area provides scientific advice and undertakes monitoring of multiple parameters in the marine environment such as the Scottish Coastal Observatory. Within the ARE Directorate, the Rural Payments and Inspections Division (RPID) are accountable for the strategic process that regulates and oversees the payment of Agricultural grants and subsidies and related inspection regimes totalling £700m/annum. In the current programme, this is split between direct aid to farmers and crofters totalling £500m and a further £200m under the banner of the Scottish Rural Development Programme. It is also responsible for other regulatory activity and expert technical advice. RPID teams of professional agricultural, customer service and administrative staff are based in a network of 17 offices located around rural Scotland. These teams manage the implementation of agricultural, environmental and rural policies, process applications for funding and provide high quality customer service. As a Higher Agricultural Officer, you will perform a key management role within the RPID Stornoway office, managing, developing and supporting a team of 5 Agricultural Officers.   The Agricultural Officer team undertake a wide variety of duties, many of an outdoor nature, including visits to crofts to carry out inspections. Our inspections may involve working in a livestock environment, verifying land eligibility in diverse landscapes and carrying out site visits in relation to crofting matters such as regulatory applications and capital grants. The team also undertake desk-based processing of claims and applications, and engage directly with customers as the primary point of contact for crofters and the rural community in the area.   This position is primarily a management role, but it also includes the requirement to undertake some inspections as well, and carrying out site visits to diverse types of agricultural establishments, often over extensive and difficult terrain and in all weather conditions. Would you like to work for an organisation that works towards protecting Scotland's seas for the benefit of all in Scotland?   If you can demonstrate the relevant practical experience in working at sea as a certified Able Seafarer and have experience in handling small workboats and RIBs, then we would like to hear from you.   Marine Directorate is the lead marine management organisation in Scotland.  It was established in April 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas.   The Marine Patrol Vessels are involved in monitoring compliance with International, UK and National rules and regulations of licensed activities in the marine environment around Scotland out to 200 miles and beyond when required. This includes enforcing UK, and International fisheries laws and regulations. This is intended to assist the conservation of fish stocks and in creating the conditions necessary for the existence of a modern and sustainable sea fishing industry.   The Marine Research Vessels’ main function is to ensure efficient and effective provision at sea to support the work of the scientific programme within Marine Directorate. Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme. To ensure this success both Marine Research Vessels are fitted with a wide range of deployment and recovery facilities for fishing gear and equipment, scientific and environmental sensors, and data gathering systems.   The Marine Protection Vessels are Minna, Jura and Hirta. Minna is 47 metres in length and both Jura and Hirta are 84 metres in length. These vessels carry out patrols which normally last 21 days. Marine Directorate also operate a number of smaller independent craft within the inshore protection programme. The research vessels, MRV Alba Na Mara and MRV Scotia are 27 metres and 69 metres in length respectively. Research cruises can vary in length, on Alba. Scotia works a 4 week on 4 week off schedule  All vessels work double crewing allowing for trip on/trip off rostering.   As a Seaman you will generally be based on our compliance and science vessels however, it is expected that, if successful, you may also spend time on the smaller independent RIBs used as part of the Inshore Protection Programme.   You will be based onboard any of the vessels where you will be part of a team responsible to the First Officer onboard. The role will follow a marine working pattern which in general is 3 weeks on/off (4 weeks on 4 weeks off for Scotia).   The vessels work mainly in Scottish waters using Aberdeen and Glasgow as their turn around locations. The Marine Directorate manages Scotland’s marine and freshwater environments, dealing with issues such as sea fisheries, marine litter, offshore renewables and aquaculture. We have more than 700 staff around Scotland including scientists, mariners, enforcement officers, policy specialists, finance specialists and economists.    Operations currently have our own fleet of two aircraft, three Marine Protection vessels, two inshore protection vessels and two Marine Research vessels making us an exciting, unique and dynamic working environment.   Marine Directorate Operations are responsible for deterring and detecting illegal activities through effective compliance and enforcement arrangements. We employ Marine staff that are responsible for the crewing of Marine Scotland Compliance's three Marine Protection vessels and Coastal Inspection staff, who make up the Sea Fisheries Inspectorate.  The Coastal staff are located at 18 Fishery Offices around the coast of Scotland and at the Registration of Buyers and Sellers (RBS) Unit, which is based in Aberdeen. The UK Fisheries Monitoring Centre is based in Victoria Quay, Edinburgh.   As Operations Officer, you contribute to the effective delivery in the District of the enforcement, monitoring and surveillance task in relation to sea fisheries legislation and other marine related legislation under the powers given to British Sea-Fishery Officers, Marine Enforcement Officer and any other powers assigned to the post.  You will also contribute to the team to monitor compliance under instruction from the Senior Operations officer.   You will ensure that full use is made of available analytical information, along with the organisation of data from a variety of sources to achieve the objectives of the Operating Model and local Business Plan.   A part of your responsibility as an Operation Officer will be to participate and, under the guidance of the Senior Operations officer, contribute to investigations arising from breaches of Marine Licencing legislation, working closely with MS LOT and ESOA. You will be working in a skilled and experienced team who will guide you through the processes to acquire the knowledge in Marine Licence Compliance.    Officers based at our coastal locations may conduct inspections onshore in factories and on board fishing vessels whilst in harbour. Inspections of fish and documentation are conducted at the premises of fish buyers and sellers as well as in vehicles used to transport fisheries products. Inspections are conducted 24/7 in-line with the operations of the industry and officers can expect to undertake some of their duties in unsocial hours and at weekends.   Coastal based Fishery Officers may also have the opportunity to undertake sea-going duties both in offshore and inshore operations.   Operations Officers are warranted British Sea Fishery Officers (BSFOs) working under the supervision of Senior Officers. It was established in April 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas.   The Fishing Mate role is based on our scientific vessels.  As part of the onboard team, you will be one of the navigational watch keepers, assisting the Commanding Officer and/or the Fishing Master with the running of the vessel, fishing operations and scientific equipment operation.    You will be responsible for Passage Planning and maintenance of charts and nautical publications, including Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs).  You will also be responsible for inspecting and ensuring that all lifesaving appliances (LSA), portable firefighting equipment (FFE) and pollution prevention equipment are maintained in good condition and ready for immediate use.   The Marine Research Vessels’ main function is to ensure efficient and effective provision at sea to support the work of the scientific programme within Marine Scotland. Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme. To ensure this success both Marine Research Vessels are fitted with a wide range of deployment and recovery facilities for fishing gear and equipment, scientific and environmental sensors, and data gathering systems.   The marine research vessels are - MRV Alba Na Mara and MRV Scotia and are 27 metres and 69 metres in length respectively.  Research cruises vary in length, but generally are no more than 28 days.   All vessels work double crewing allowing for trip on/trip off rostering.
